Jil and Scooter have been fortunate to work alongside many of the nest artists in Celtic music, resulting in many spontaneous collaborations.Īs singer and flute and whistle player, Jil Chambless has performed across the US as well as in Canada, Scotland, and Israel with many artists and bands. They will be joined by the accomplished piper Cathleen Nixon, who has taught at the North American Academy of Piping and Drumming, and percussionist Jason Higgins, a former Marine Band drummer and lead drummer of the Grandfather Mountain Highlanders Pipe Band.įor more than 25 years, Alabama natives Jil Chambless and Scooter Muse have been performing the music of Scotland, Ireland and early America with various ensembles in a wide variety of venues, from house concerts to festivals and concert halls. StrathSpan is Julia Weatherford and her cello at the eastern end of the Swannanoa Valley in North Carolina, and Nora Garver and her fiddle in Asheville at the western end of the Swannanoa Valley. The repertoire ranges from elegant marches and strathspeys to driving reels, from lively jigs to soulful airs, with occasional forays into Irish, Scandinavian, and Breton traditions. The resulting music evokes the timeless sensations of heartbeat and laughter, waves and sea creatures, joyous dance and ancient ceremony. The sound of StrathSpan starts with traditional Scottish pipe and fiddle tunes, layering innovative harmonies and rhythms. StrathSpan creates a musical tapestry of the rich tones of cello interwoven with the lyrical voice of the violin. They have performed in venues such as the Kennedy Center, Strathmore Music center, CCE Irish Folk Festival Fairfax VA, Hylton Performing Arts Center, Virginia Scottish games, and the Niel Gow Festival in Scotland. Kevin plays guitar, whistle, banjo, and is an All-Ireland champion vocalist. Seán plays fiddle, cezouki, shruti box, harp and sings in English and Scots Gaelic. Original compositions abound and they have rich vocal harmonies in their solid song repertoire that features ballads, sea shanties, and songs in Irish and Scottish folk tradition. The Seán Heely Celtic Band brings together many different instruments to perform fiery dance tunes and ancient, soaring melodies from Scotland, Ireland, and beyond. Other members have included Scottish border piper Tracy Jenkins, harpist Abbie Palmer, dancer Marsha Searle and percussionists Matthew Bell & Alex Kuldell. Featuring U.S National Scottish Fiddle champion and singer Seán Heely, acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and All-Ireland singing champion Kevin Elam, bouzouki and bass player Beth Patterson, acclaimed percussionist Lucas Ashby, and percussive dancer Agi Kovacs.
